IMPORTANCE OF LEARNING A FOREIGN LANGUAGE AT SCHOOL

by: Benjamin Franklin Gunawan Year 8

There are numerous advantages to learning a foreign language at school. One of the most important is how it helps students become better global citizens. Understanding another language opens a window into other cultures and encourages respect. This awareness is especially vital in our increasingly interconnected world, where intercultural communication is an integral part of everyday life.

In my experience as a foreigner, learning the local language has been both challenging and rewarding. The most challenging part about learning Thai is reading and writing the Thai words. It’s either finding the right tone for the word or finding the right consonants. But, once you master all these basics, you will be fluent in Thai language.

Learning a foreign language is important because it enhances cognitive abilities by utilizing the brain, improves communication and cultural understanding by exposing learners to different ways of thinking, boosts career prospects by making students more competitive in a global job market, and eases travel by helping them adapt to new environments more easily. It also strengthens memory, making it easier to absorb and retain information across all areas of learning.

In addition to the many cognitive and practical benefits, learning a foreign language also encourages students to step outside their comfort zones, helping them build confidence and flexibility as they cope with unfamiliar sounds, words, and cultural norms. Furthermore, being able to connect with people from diverse backgrounds can lead to meaningful friendships and collaborations. These interpersonal skills are just as valuable as academic achievements, making language learning a powerful tool for overall development.

In conclusion, learning a foreign language in school goes far beyond just speaking another language. It empowers students to thrive in a diverse global society and develop personal qualities such as confidence, patience, and resilience. Investing time in language learning is worth a brighter future.
